Mercury the Messenger – Illustration Friday

Mercury-the-messenger

As soon as my daughter came to know that this week’s topic for Illustration Friday is ‘messenger’, she made a quick suggestion that I should illustrate ‘Mercury’ (Mercurius) – the messenger from Roman mythology.

Mercury is depicted wearing winged sandals that helped him make swift flights and holding a ‘Caduceus’ (symbol of commerce) in his hand. Mercury delivered messages from gods.

This is my entry for Illustration Friday after a while and really enjoyed making this pencil sketch.

Corn Husk Dolls

CORN HUSK DOLLS
Corn husk dolls have been made by Native Americans more than a thousand years ago. I have heard about it since then I was thinking to make it…and one day my daughter forced me to do it…and yes, We did it!  It was really fun to make these dolls.

Ilustration Friday entry for the topic – Toy (भातुकली)

Toy…when you think of a toy, you will find thousands of beautiful and different types of toys all over.
When I was a child, I had very few toys…and one of them was a set of ‘Bhaatukli’ (भातुकली) which means a set of ‘cooking utensils’. Most of girls in India are familiar and might have played with this in their childhood.
Earlier this cooking set was made of clay, then came the wooden version…and nowadays you will find it in steel as well…”I have the one made in ‘Copper’ back home in India!”
The treats used for playing with this were peanuts, jaggery, rice flakes etc. The whole afternoon in summer vacations were full of ‘Bhaatukli’ (भातुकली) playing with friends.
Childhood, the beautiful days of life…

For this week’s topic, I used ‘Air Dry’ Clay to craft this cooking set toy and painted it to give the ‘Terracotta’ look. Hope you like it.

An ‘Elephant’ for breakfast

Elephant sandwich
Being an artist, I find shapes everytime, everywhere…
Was having my favorite breakfast, ‘Egg Omelette on Wheat Toast’, had a bite and placed it back on the plate…voila – I discovered an ‘elephant’s trunk’, and ended up making one!
…then probably, I ate the whole ‘elephant’…though I’m vegetarian 🙂

Illustration Friday – ‘sweater’

SweaterIF

When I read the topic ‘sweater’ for this week’s Illustration Friday, the first thing struck my mind was soft wool yarn. I was thinking to create something with wool, but wait, I had just bought new sweatpants for my daughter. As usual, they were a bit long and had to cut them short…

Well, now you can guess what I did with that extra fabric… 🙂
Hope you like this warm cozy little pink ‘sweater’!

Sweet Jewelry (हलव्याचे दागिने)

 SweetJwelery

हलव्याचे दागिने (Jewelry made with sugar candies which is called ‘Halwa’ in Marathi)
This cute looking jewelry is made to celebrate ‘Makar Sankranta’ (a Hindu festival celebrated in the Month of January every year). Babies and kids up to 5 years of age dressed up with this sweet jewelry. Such type of jewelry is also made for newlywed brides. This is the only day in a year when a newlywed bride can wear a black saree and this white jewelry looks just beautiful on it.

This sweet jewelry was adorned by cute Tanvi (my friend Shilpa’s daughter) and other babies. This is an authentic Marathi way of celebrating ‘Makar-Sankranta’ festival, simply enjoyed making it!

Illustration Friday entry for the topic ‘Winter’

Winter-Illustration Friday
IF-Winter-Dec-2010-Leena, originally uploaded by Leena Bagawde.

For the topic ‘winter’ I made this unique looking Christmas tree inspired by a tribal art called ‘Warli’. ‘Warli’ is a tribe from Thane in Maharashtra (western India).  These people paint there huts with mud which is reddish brown and on it they paint trees, houses, people with a white paint. It looks so wonderful! I tried the same combination here for the Christmas tree!

Three-wheeler ‘Rickshaw’ for Illustration Friday topic – ‘transportation’

I sketched an ‘auto rickshaw’, (for those who don’t know) a 3-wheeler vehicle commonly used as a mode of transportation in sub-urban cities of India. It is supposed to be the most convenient ways to commute, however, off-late saying this would be a controversy. A rickshaw doesn’t have any door, you can just hop-in and enjoy the ‘cool breeze’ while traveling. The ‘cool breeze’ part would be a fantasy now, as most of the times you may feel stuck in one, entangled in the city traffic.

Making those tiny round tires for this 3-wheeler, was a tedious job. Was about to give up and submit only the sketch as a last-minute entry. Just then, I saw a few candies lying on the table. Voila…they soon became those perfectly round ‘tires’… 🙂 Hope you like it.
